How many ways can you use a ceiling mounted projector and screen in a school hall?

One of the biggest impacts that I’ve seen technology make on a school this year is the installation of a simple but powerful projector and electric screen in the school hall.

The hardware depends on the size of the hall but the application is similar for Secondary and Primary schools. We usually do a demonstration on completing the install and I love to see the faces of the staff as its potential begins to dawn. The gasps and smiles alone as the electric screen descends almost make it worthwhile. (I even had a round of applause from a hall full of children seeing it for the first time – we hadn’t even switched the projector on!)The sound system has got to be good and blowing the roof off is often the aim.

The installation must result in easy use for the staff and (dare I suggest) pupils and so complicated mixer desks and permanent connections are out.So imagine a multi media cabinet with high quality components that can be wheeled in and out of the hall. Put in a mixture of hardware

  • CD and/or tape player for assemblies, discos, dance
  • A DVD for showing cinema style to more than one class
  • PC or laptop for powerpoints to governors, parents or classes
  • Visualiser for quickly displaying hymns or ‘Top work’ to the whole school
  • School plays might need a microphone and backdrop
  • A Wii for use in Breakfast Clubs and after school clubs
  • etc
  • As the teachers begin to discuss and see the impact that this presentation system can have on learning we soon see it used every minute of the day. Now we need a solution for the booking sheet! What do you use yours for?please leave your comments here

The interactive PJD7383i and the PJD7583wi negate the need for costly interactive white boards as teachers are able to write directly onto the projected image with the included interactive pen without the need for alignment or calibrationAn additional teacher-friendly feature is evident in the 7 Series’ “short throw” projection, allowing 80-inch images to be projected from less than one metre away. This will put an end to teachers being blinded by the Projector Lamp. Read more of this post

Will the loss of Becta give schools a fresh chance to make technology click?

Will the loss of Becta give schools a fresh chance to make technology click?

Becta, the education technology quango is on its way out. Is this an opportunity to be more creative about how we use computers at schools?

The parents’ evening at our local secondary was going well until we came to the art department. I pointed out that our 12-year-old greatly enjoys making videos — cutting together films taken with a Flip video camera, choosing songs for the soundtrack, and synchronising them with frame-quality accuracy. Could she, I asked, do a film-making course? The school had some computers apparently dedicated to film-making. And it is art. Sort of. Read more of this post

    Why these features matter

2007 – 2008 was all about software. Apple redefined the mobile phone market with the focus firmly on software and the user experience that could be had when using a mobile phone. iPhone apps extended the benefits of focusing on software by enabling a mobile phone to be extended in limitless ways.
2009 was about the rest of the mobile phone world catching up with Apple and also focusing on software. The result has been a raft of new smartphones, operating systems and user interfaces (not to mention different app stores), all of which aim to recreate the iPhone experience (not all of them having success in doing this).
But there’s only so much you can do to make one smartphone different from another. The latest iPhones and Android phones for example, now have very similar applications.
So why is this phone so amazing and also so different from its other competitors?
This is because Samsung have thrown all of its technology into this phone and improved it where possible making it easy to use.

    Imaging

Take imaging, for example. The Samsung Halo doesn’t just have a 3.2 megapixel camera, like the iPhone – it’s got a 8 megapixel camera, and as Samsung’s Pixon range feature some of the best quality camera phone technology on the market. Video is excellent. This phone feature’s 720p HD video playback. With the Hero, not only do you get 720p playback and recording, you can watch it on the new SuperAMOLED screen that Samsung’s developed, which is unbelievably clear and bright, with contrast levels that are Amazing to say its from a mobile phone.

The Pico Projector (the coolest thing on this phone)

Probably the best feature to accompany the HD video is the Pico projector. At the touch of a button, your phone’s UI, photos, videos – anything you like – can be beamed onto a wall or any flat surface. This phone will impress everyone including the iphone users especially with the micro projector that doesn’t need replacement lamps. The one this this phone is missing is 3D features when are they coming to phone’s?

How to recycle your projector lamp

Recycling is becoming increasingly important, not only for the environment but for animals and people. The Projector Lamp found in projectors should be recycled, not thrown away. Besides being breakable, they contain mercury which is harmful to the environment, causing a safety risk. There are several ways to recycle your Projector Lamps, whether you are a business with lots of bulbs or a homeowner with only one projector bulb. Below are four simple steps to recycling your projector lamps

    • · Step 1

Remove each lamp as instructed in the projector’s user manual. Always wait for the bulb to cool down before removing.

    • Step 2

Once the old Projector Lamp has been removed place inside the new replacement lamp box check the new lamp works okay and securely fit it inside the box. Bubble wrap if possible.

    • Step 3

If your employer recycles projector Lamps (certain businesses recycle their bulbs and will gladly take bulbs from employees to recycle as well).  Then please just hand over your old projector lamp to them however if they don’t please continue to step 4.

    • Step 4

“Banning a child from certain sites may only motivate them to spend more time on them, whereas educating your child on how to keep safe will give them the tools they need to navigate their online world without being hurt. Please make sure they know and understand the reason for not posting personal information on websites. Also that people they are talking to may not actually be who they are. If the parents know the dangers themselves, this sets an example to the child to understand them as well.”
