How many ways can you use a ceiling mounted projector and screen in a school hall?

One of the biggest impacts that I’ve seen technology make on a school this year is the installation of a simple but powerful projector and electric screen in the school hall.

The hardware depends on the size of the hall but the application is similar for Secondary and Primary schools. We usually do a demonstration on completing the install and I love to see the faces of the staff as its potential begins to dawn. The gasps and smiles alone as the electric screen descends almost make it worthwhile. (I even had a round of applause from a hall full of children seeing it for the first time – we hadn’t even switched the projector on!)The sound system has got to be good and blowing the roof off is often the aim.

The installation must result in easy use for the staff and (dare I suggest) pupils and so complicated mixer desks and permanent connections are out.So imagine a multi media cabinet with high quality components that can be wheeled in and out of the hall. Put in a mixture of hardware

  • CD and/or tape player for assemblies, discos, dance
  • A DVD for showing cinema style to more than one class
  • PC or laptop for powerpoints to governors, parents or classes
  • Visualiser for quickly displaying hymns or ‘Top work’ to the whole school
  • School plays might need a microphone and backdrop
  • A Wii for use in Breakfast Clubs and after school clubs
  • etc
  • As the teachers begin to discuss and see the impact that this presentation system can have on learning we soon see it used every minute of the day. Now we need a solution for the booking sheet! What do you use yours for?please leave your comments here

Computer Gamers help Produce Scientific research

In Foldit, gamers take on protein challenges

Since computer scientists at the University of Washington launched a project in 2008 that taps into the brainpower of computer gamers to fold proteins, almost 60,000 people around the world have taken on the challenge.

In the process, Foldit players have been able to beat computers on problems that require radical moves, risks, and long-term vision, according to results being published on Thursday, in the journal Nature.

“The really fundamental question in most scientists’ minds was, ‘What can it produce, in terms of results? Is there any evidence that it’s doing something useful?'” says principal investigator Zoran Popovic, a UW associate professor of computer science and engineering. “I hope this paper will convince a lot of those people who were sitting on the sidelines, and the whole genre of scientific discovery games will really take off.”

There are more than 100,000 different kinds of proteins in the human body alone, forming every cell and setting the speed of chemical reactions. While scientists already know the genetic sequences of many, they’re still working to understand how they fold up into complex shapes that play vital biological roles.

Thousands of computers are already calculating how physical forces would cause a protein to fold. But computers do not always outperform humans, so the UW team decided to involve the power of thousands of human brains. It turns out that in Foldit, which is free, people tend to outperform computers when a problem requires intuitive leaps or strategy shifts.

Foldit has been compared to Tetris, but instead of stacking blocks, players fold a protein. Players are awarded points based on the internal energy of the 3D protein structure, and every puzzle has a high score that players can try to beat.

How to recycle your projector lamp

Recycling is becoming increasingly important, not only for the environment but for animals and people. The Projector Lamp found in projectors should be recycled, not thrown away. Besides being breakable, they contain mercury which is harmful to the environment, causing a safety risk. There are several ways to recycle your Projector Lamps, whether you are a business with lots of bulbs or a homeowner with only one projector bulb. Below are four simple steps to recycling your projector lamps

    • · Step 1

Remove each lamp as instructed in the projector’s user manual. Always wait for the bulb to cool down before removing.

    • Step 2

Once the old Projector Lamp has been removed place inside the new replacement lamp box check the new lamp works okay and securely fit it inside the box. Bubble wrap if possible.

    • Step 3

If your employer recycles projector Lamps (certain businesses recycle their bulbs and will gladly take bulbs from employees to recycle as well).  Then please just hand over your old projector lamp to them however if they don’t please continue to step 4.

    • Step 4

Go online to http://www.lamphouse.co.uk/enviromental to find the address you need to post your old projector lamp back to.

Please check back in a few weeks to see our new video on how to Pro-Long your Projector lamp and a small video on recycling.

“Banning a child from certain sites may only motivate them to spend more time on them, whereas educating your child on how to keep safe will give them the tools they need to navigate their online world without being hurt. Please make sure they know and understand the reason for not posting personal information on websites. Also that people they are talking to may not actually be who they are. If the parents know the dangers themselves, this sets an example to the child to understand them as well.”

This is the NEW 3D forget the TV’s we want this!!!!

The RayModeler 3D display you’re seeing in this video is a prototype. This device reminds us of star wars holographic video calling every sci-fi kids dream. LED light sources allow you to see an image from all angles, 360 degrees. Objects like faces and people appear realistic giving viewers a sense of depth because the left and right eyes are seeing different images. You’ll notice in the video the images even react and move when prompted by the wave of a hand. Though the device can’t let you see into the future, it is the future of how we will display objects, game or even see advertisements or displays at stores.
This is new 3D we want not the 3D TV’s that are coming out where you have to watch them with glasses.
